can a female doctor and nurse perform a male genital exam? | Men’s Zone discussions | Family Health center (2023)

Would like to hear from guys who had one done and female Drs and nurses who performed them.

Is a female Doctor allowed to perform a male genital exam? And will she be alone or have to have a female chaperone with her? I injured my groin and my primary Dr is female. So I was wondering if she would be the one to perform the exam. Or would a male Dr do it since I'm male. If it's my female Dr and she has to have a nurse with her. I'm worried that I will get an erection in front of the two of them. Will they be mad if that happens while she is examining me? This is my first time having an exam like this and I just want to know what to expect. Like will I have to be naked the whole time with her in the room? And will the nurse see my penis as well as the dr? Thanks for any advice.

Hey sunny, first off let me assure you that it is totally normal to be nervous about this type of an appointment. with that said both male and female providers can and do male genital exams and are there to help you. it is up to the patient weather he feels comfortable with a female provider. if there is not a male provider in the office can see you you might want to go to an urgent care center and request a male provider. Otherwise, I would not worry. as for chaperones, we are taught that it is a good idea to have a chaperone usually the same sex as the patient,in the room when examining patients of the opposite sex however it is not mandatory and is up to provider and patient preference. If you would feel more comfortable with another person in the room you can certianly request it (you may want to mention that to the nurse who takes your vitals). If you don't want a chapeone in the room then you can try requesting it. Sometimes the provider will only do anexam with a chaperone (this is for their safety and yours). as for getting an erection many times this does not happen especiall if you are nervous however, if it does don't worry you won't be the first or the last and as providers we are taught to just continue and not make a big deal about it since it is a normal body response and you don't have any control over it. when it comes time for the exam. you will usually remain fully clothed or possibly in a gown. the doctor will ask you questions related to your concern just as if you were at the doctor for a cold or a twisted ankle. then when its time for the exam you will generally lift the gown or pull down your pants enough for the provider to examinyour genitals. you should only be exposed for the amount of timed needed for the exam and then be alllowedto cover up.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thanks for your response. I ended up making an appointment with my primary Dr. I've been seeing her for years and I trust her to examine me down there. I saw her about 3 hours ago. Being a smaller clinic they only had female nurses. But I told her I was ok with the nurse being there. I thankfully did not get an erection during the exam. The only strange part to me about the exam. Is that she didn't wear gloves while handling my genitals. Is that normal for a Dr to do that? She held my penis with 2 fingers and her thumb. And was moving it around while feeling around my testicles. It only lasted about a minute and she had me cover up. Saying she doesn't think there is any damage. But wants me to schedule a follow up if the pain doesn't go away in a week or so. It was just really weird having her not wear gloves while holding my penis and doing the exam. Is there any medical reason that would make the exam more thorough by not wearing gloves.

Thanks again for your previous response. I'm releaved everything seemed to go well. Just not sure why she didn't wear gloves. The nurse was just starting at the wall most of the time and only really looked at what the Dr was doing for maybe 5 seconds out of the whole exam. Thanks, looking forward to your response.

Hey I’m glad to hear the exam went well!! As for not wearing gloves, while kostnoroviders wear gloves (as we were trained to in school) some do not. Often this is to increase sensation to the provider. Gloves ,while thin can make it difficult to feel small details or changes in the genitalia anatomy. I have been examined both with gloves and without. When they are done without the provider usually washes his or her hands right after and def before leaving the room. During my Urology clinical the urologist never wore gloves when he did male genital exams. Also they way the held your penis is also appropriate.

I also saw your post about being exposed during the ultrasound. I am sorry that happened but know that it is completely normal to get an erection and while embarrassing is nothing you have controls over which is why the lady technician said it was ok. As for being covered up did she notice your penis became uncovered a little before the erection? And once you had an erection did the drape fall totally off or how we’re you then exposed?

And Out of curiosity Can I asked what made you go to the doctor for this issue in the first place ?

Thanks!

Thanks for responding so quickly. By how you said about clinicals and things. I'm guessing you're a fully certified Dr. I'm curious though, are you male male or female? Only asking so I know who the advice is coming from. And if it's from a man or woman perspective.

As for the ultrasound, that happened a few months ago after my 8 year old nephew and I were playing around pretending to do karate. He ended up kicking me in the groin. I went to a Dr and they sent me for an ultrasound right away without even doing an exam.

And the way it happened was, as she was moving the wand around. It was bumping the towel covering me at times. And at one point my flaccid penis, shaft and head fell out from under the towel. I don't know how she couldn't have seen and notice it was exposed. But she didn't bother to cover it again. Like she did earlier when it fell out for a second near the beginning. She just let me completely exposed. And because of the wand hitting it every so often. I started to get the feeling every guy knows. And I slowly started getting erect until I was standing straight up rock hard. Even then she just kept going for another 5-10 minutes. Which def added to my embarrassment. There is no way she could have missed seeing it. Do you think she left me uncovered on purpose because she liked it? Or was she just doing her job and thought I was ok with it? Ill admit I was that embarrassed at one point that I started crying a few tears that I hope she didnt see. I know she is probably used to guys getting erections and she didn't touch me inappropriately or anything. Just curious if once she saw my flaccid penis exposed. If she left me uncovered because she was hoping I'd get an erection. Thanks for talking to me about these things. Just needed to get them off my chest.

Hey Sunny,
To answer your question I am a male and currently a physician assistant student (have you heard of them) not sure where you are from or if they have PA’s there but I live in the US. When you first went to the doctor after getting kicked where did you go ? The emergency room or your primary doctor or an urgent care? was it immediately after or a day or more later? Did you have any swelling in your scrotum? I am very surprised they did not examin you before sending you for ultrasound. It’s something they should have definitely done.
As for the ultrasound itself I’m sorry you had that bad experience and were made to feel so embarrassed that should not have happened. I can’t say since I wasn’t there, but it’s understandable to me that she may not have noticed your penis pop out the second time because once the ultrasound is started the tech usually focuses on the screen. So it’s possible she didn’t notice. As for when you got an erection did any of your penis stay covered by the towel? In that situation it’s difficult for a provider because you’re torn between just hurrying and finishing the exam and not bringing attention to the erection or taking g s break stepping out of the room and letting your erection go down then finishing. Regardless if she did notice it and wasn’t focused on the screen the whole time she should have covered it up when she noticed as it would cause the patient to feel very very exposed and that is a terrible feeling.

I don't know your age but I'm almost 80 and I've been examined and worked on by female doctors andnurses so many times nothing bothers me now. I was in the army when I hurt my back and went to the hospital where they decided to have me get in a whirlpool. Since I didn't know I was going to hurt myself I didn't have a bathing suit with me and my choice was skivvies on or off. I chose off rather than deal with carrying wet ones back. In walked this beautiful young girl to massage my back while sitting in the pool. Almost as soon as she began, up it came which was somewhat embarrassing but she said something that made that go away. Of course being bent over my shoulders to rub my back she was looking at it most of the time which eventually got both of us laughing because, well, what else could you do?

Some years later I was at the hospital for a GI series wearing a johnny, laying on my side and it opened up so I was fully exposed to the nurse who was assisting. She was the wife of the bartender where my wife and I went to eat nearly every weekend so I got to see her often.

When I had bypass surgery they sent in a teenaged girl to give me a full body shave. She had to move mypenis and testicles around to do that. I was out when they inserted the catheter but a nurse removed it for me to go home and she held my penis while doing that.

At the VA my ARNP was a female who gave me a prostate examand once she had a female trainee with her who did a real full physical exam.

I lost my male family doctor when Obamacare became the law of the land and I ended up with a female doctor who demonstrated how I should do my own testicle exam plus she did the prostate exam.

Except for that whirlpool massage in the army I have never had an erection while the females worked on me. None of them have had any chaperones.

My wife was in the ER recently where a young male hooked her up for an EKG. He was one of her customers at work and she was naked from the waist up. He had to lift her breasts to place the stickers and that only bothered her a little bit.

So you get used to medical procedures.

Hi, sorry I haven't been on for a while. I did get the replies. I was wondering if you had any female co-workers who are on this site also. Or who could give there experience with this for you to relay to me. Would like to hear a woman's opinion on this topic as well if possible. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hey good to hear from you again. None of the females I work with are in here but the ones I’ve talked too are pretty laid back with it. They say that it something that they just do without getting too worked up about typically. There are things in medicine that can sometimes be uncomfortable but we do them because we are here to help people and so that’s what our main goal is. When you view it that way it’s not that difficult to do.? Not sureIf that makes any sense or not I’m pretty tired this infectious disease and internal med rotation I’m doing has crazy long hours and I’m beat

You don't make a big deal is a outright lie. You do not speak for others and we have several nurses disciplined for photographing or observing male genitallia.in violation of modesty standards. (Houston and New York).

I have had this happen to me and I guarantee you that it will not happen again. I will go to a female doctor again for anything and let her do whatever she feels is medically necessary. However, if she brings in a female chaperone I will object. If the doctor insists I will get up, get dressed and leave.
I am not bothered by a female just doing her job. I feel I know what she is thinking. She is thinking about doing her job. What is the chaperone sitting there looking up between my legs thinking about? I am not going to undergo getting an erection again under these circumstances. I find it very embarrassing and I will not tolerate it any more!
There is no reason for a female to use a chaperone with a male. Males are not passive aggressive. They do not bring false charges against female doctors. Men may misbehave because they are directly aggressive but they are not passive aggressive. If medical providers are worried about male misbehavior they obviously would be better off with a male chaperone.

I’ve had a female doctor/ nurse practitioner for many years and am much more comfortable with a woman health care provider. It’s a little embarrassing but I just don’t feel comfortable with a man examining me. It seems creepy. As for getting an erection, that’s never happened.
